Saturday Sports: Practice Gymnastics Meet
My 7-year-old daughter was chosen to be on team gymnastics after only a few months at her new gym. She started gymnastics at age 5, and has come a long way in just over 2 years. Today, we spent our afternoon watching a practice competition with all of the compulsory teams from her gym. She is currently Level 2, and has done a great job learning her routines. I did not do a very good job recording on my phone, and I missed the first parts of her routines; but I thought for her first time learning to compete, she is doing great! I'm excited to see how she progresses over the course of her competitive season! Good job baby girl!

Funny Friday: Election Ad Videos
I have strong political opinions, but today I put them aside to share a little bit of humor from Bored Shorts TV. My kids love watching Kid Snippits, and my husband and I got a huge kick out of their funny election ad videos. I especially enjoyed the Bernie Sanders one, because it is so accurate and funny. Have a great weekend!

Throwback Thursday: Becoming a Mom
When I think back on the day I learned I would be a Mom for the first time, I can still remember so many details. It was a Sunday in December just over eight years ago; my husband and I had been taking a Sunday afternoon nap, but I woke up before him. I decided to sneak into the bathroom to take a pregnancy test and surprise him with the results when he woke up. The test immediately turned positive, and I immediately reacted by screaming "I'm pregnant!" so loud I woke him up. He nearly fell out of bed as I continued to scream and freak out a little.
It's hard to put into words the way I felt then: excited, terrified, and every other emotion I could think of all rolled into one. It's kind of the way I feel now (8 years and 4 kids later) about being a Mom. We waited longer than most of our friends to start our family, but I don't think anyone ever feels fully prepared for parenthood. Some days I feel like a complete failure, but other days my kids make me feel so proud and honored to have been chosen to be their Mom.
These are a few thoughts that sum up my feelings on Motherhood:

Web Wednesday: Don't Worry, Be Happy
I sometimes get discouraged when I read the news, or go on social media. It seems like we are bombarded with all things negative. Sometimes it's nice to have positive messages or videos to brighten our day. Here's a thought and video that made me smile this week, and I hope it puts a smile on your face too. Enjoy!

Travel Tuesday: Save on Hotels
Having four small children makes it difficult to even want to travel very far these days; however, there have been times when we have needed to get a hotel room while on a short out-of-town trip. I use Priceline to save big on hotels with their Name Your Own Price feature, or their new Express Deals. They each have their own advantages/disadvantages.
Name Your Own Price:
- Biggest advantage: Most of the time, this is the way to get the best price. You choose the area you want to stay, the star rating you want, and the price you are willing to pay. If you do not win the bid, you have to wait 24 hours to up your bid with those same parameters. If you want to immediately try another bid, you must change parameters by either adding either another area, or lower the acceptable star rating. It helps to be familiar with what deals are most likely to be accepted.
- Biggest disadvantage: you don't get to choose the hotel you want. For example: some 2.5 star hotels are very nice, and others might be run down or not exactly in the location you would prefer. You also won't necessarily get all of the amenities you might want.
*Start bidding with enough time to try for what you want, within the budget you have set for yourself. I have gotten really nice hotels for 50-75% off their normal price using this feature!
Express Deals:
- Biggest advantages: This is usually the best way to get a great deal last minute. You are also able choose a hotel with the amenities that are important to you. By doing some detective work (and some math), you can usually figure out which specific hotels are offering these deals. You can save up to 55% on some great hotel rooms!
- Biggest disadvantage: Just like the Name Your Own Price feature, the rooms are non-refundable. They do have an option to buy traveler's insurance, which claims they will reimburse your costs if you are unable to go.
**Sometimes you can look at the Express Deals, and bid slightly under those deals for an even better price. I have done this before, and won a bid for the same hotel listed in the Express Deals for less; it's worth a try! Once you are a member of Priceline, they will also send you special deals like 10% off Express Deals when you book within a few days. Here's to some great, inexpensive hotel stays!

Mommy Monday: Miscarriages
![]() |
My baby #3 at 10 weeks |
It has been an interesting couple of months. I had been having some woman health issues, and I wasn't quite sure what was going on. I decided to go to the Dr. since I hadn't had a regular check-up in 2 years. I described my issues I was having, but after the check-up he didn't seem concerned that anything was wrong with me. He scheduled an ultrasound for the next day just to make sure I didn't have a cyst or something worse. Everything checked out fine, so I figured I would just go on with life and try to ignore the pain. We had been thinking about having a baby within the next year; and since nothing seemed wrong, we decided to think about it--and all it really takes for us is to think and it happens.
The past several weeks have been tough, because people around me have experienced tough times: a failed adoption, stillbirth, failed IVF, late miscarriage...I have felt terrible heartache and pain for each one of these situations and individuals; each suffered terrible losses. I started to feel guilty that I have had such an easy time conceiving, great pregnancies and births, and just a week ago I found out that after not even really trying, I was once again pregnant. I had a hard time feeling excited. My body was just not reacting the way it had with the other pregnancies, so doubt and concern ensued. I took a few tests just to make sure, and each day the tests seemed to get more definite; but still the lines were not as dark as they were in the past. Even more doubt crept in. Yesterday, I told Bryan that things just didn't feel right, and within hours of that I was spotting (which I have never done before in my other pregnancies). I took another test this morning, and the line was barely visible. Soon after that, the heavier bleeding began and I now know that I am experiencing my own loss. Yes, I was only a mere 5 weeks along. Most doctors would consider it a "chemical pregnancy" rather than a miscarriage. Most women would just think they were a few days late, and never have tested for pregnancy; but someone who has had a 28 day cycle for almost 20 years, always knows when it is off by even a day.
As much as I felt that something was wrong, I had also let myself dream of the new life inside me. I started planning for a new arrival right around my birthday next summer, but it wasn't meant to be. I looked online for people with the same experience, and one lady wrote that "A loss is a loss no matter when it happens". For me there is a silver lining: I am grateful it happened so early, knowing that probably means there was no chance of survival. Physically I feel good. It is actually less painful than recent months have been for me. Emotionally, I am also doing better than I was. When I initially started bleeding it was a big shock. I was way sad and I didn't sleep all night just wondering what the outcome was going to be. Now that I know, and have had all day to come to terms with it, I realize that I am so blessed to have had two amazing previous pregnancies that resulted in two beautiful children. I have time to have more successful pregnancies in the future. But I do agree with the mom who talked about how every loss IS a loss. We all think about what might have been, but I know our Heavenly Father knows best, and can comfort us when we have to go through hard experiences.
It has now been over four years since that experience, and I now have two more beautiful, healthy daughters! I think the best thing this miscarriage did for me, was to help me gain more empathy for the women I know who have gone through their own losses. When you have experienced something difficult yourself, you just do have a greater understanding of what someone is going through. It's hard to put this post out there, but I hope it can help at least one person who is struggling with a loss in their life. Much love to all of you strong women out there who have loved and lost a sweet life inside of you!

Sunday Scripture: Faith
I think all of us can use more faith. Sometimes I need some good reminders. I love this scripture, and I really liked the quotes I found. I hope you all had an enjoyable Sunday full of faith!
Alma 32:21
"And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true."

Saturday Soup: Easy Taco Soup Recipe
On a cold winter day, I love to just stick some soup in the crock pot for dinner. Nothing is easier than this taco soup. It is great to have for dinner, easy to stick in the fridge to eat later, and freezes well for a quick warm-up dinner in the future.
Easy Taco Soup
1 lb cooked chicken or hamburger
1 can black beans, undrained
1 can kidney beans, undrained
1 can corn, undrained
1 pkg dry taco seasoning mix
1 pkg dry ranch dressing mix
1 small onion
2 cans crushed, diced or stewed tomatoes
Mix all together and simmer 1-2 hours on the stove
, or cook in slow cooker 3-4 hours on high or 7-8 hours on low. I like to top mine with cheese and sour cream, and eat with tortilla chips.
You can use many different kind of beans. I love using a mix of garbanzo beans, any kind of kidney beans (red or white), pinto beans; just whatever you have in your pantry. It's easy to make the recipe bigger by just adding an extra can of beans and tomatoes. Enjoy!

Friday Favorite: Anne of Green Gables
I read the book series by Lucy Maud Montgomery as a kid, and the movies made in the 80s with Megan Follows as Anne and Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert, will never be matched in their perfection. It was perfectly cast, the acting was amazing, and I could go on for days about just how much love I have for those films. Gilbert was my first love, and Anne is one of my favorite fictional characters of all time; in fact, I gave my 2nd daughter the middle name Anne (which had to be spelled with an e).
![]() |
Anne & Matthew's bond is so touching and wonderful! |
![]() |
The dynamic between Anne, Diana & Gilbert really make the story one of the best ever! |
![]() |
Anne & Marilla got off to a rough start, but develop such a beautiful relationship! |

Who didn't want a guy like Gilbert, and a relationship like he and Anne had. Love it! |
I am way excited to share my love of Anne with my kids, especially my daughters. I need to finish unpacking my books, so I can share the magic of the Anne of Green Gables with my oldest daughter soon. Now I'm in the mood for an Anne of Green Gables movie marathon! Have a great weekend!

Thowback Thursday: Siblings
1981: Here I am with my one and only sibling at the time, my big brother Nate. How cute are we?
1989: I was 7-going-on-8 years old (the same age my oldest daughter is right now). My brother Pete was a new baby, and we were a family of 6 (the current size of my little family). This picture is priceless!
2013: My brother Nate finally got married at age 33, and all of my siblings finally got together for the first time in 5 1/2 years. Aren't we such a good looking group? Having siblings is the best! I know my kids will always appreciate having siblings; I think that is part of why I keep having more kids. I am blessed with the best, and I appreciate my parents for having all 9 of us!

Watch it Wednesday: When Calls the Heart
Looking for an awesome show that is family friendly? Look no further than Hallmark Channel's original series When Calls the Heart!
A short description of the show from Wikipedia:
When Calls the Heart is an American-Canadian television drama series, inspired by Janette Oke's book When Calls the Heart from her Canadian West Series, and developed by Michael Landon, Jr. It tells the story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high-society life. She receives her first classroom assignment in Hope Valley, a small coal-mining town in Western Canada (most likely the Province of Alberta, as the town of Medicine Hat is mentioned as the nearest larger settlement). There, life is simple—but often fraught with challenges. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Royal North West Mounted Police Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing). He believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman's career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter.
Seasons 1 & 2 are available on Netflix, or you can buy them through Amazon Video, iTunes, etc. Season 3 starts on Hallmark Channel on February 21, 2016! I love this show for the great story telling, awesome characters with actors who have great chemistry (it doesn't hurt that they are all good looking), and it is a clean show I can watch with my entire family! Here is a little preview:

Tuesday Tip: Big Interest Checking Accounts
As we all know, the economy is not doing great right now. Finding bank accounts that earn decent interest, seems nearly impossible. Savings accounts are only getting a rate of about .10%. So what are your options for earning a lot more than that?
Several years ago, I started using checking accounts with bigger interest rates, just by completing a few requirements. They are sometimes called "Big Interest" or "High-Yield Interest" checking accounts; original, I know. I have a few of them through different banks/credit unions. Here's what you need to know:
- Interest rates: Used to be higher, but mine are now between .75 - 1.6%
- Amount limits: You can receive the higher interest rates only up to $10,000; $25,000; or $50,000; etc. depending on the bank, then the remaining balance earns a lower rate.
- You must meet the following requirements to get the higher interest each month:
+ Enroll in eStatements through online banking, and some require you to login-in to your account regularly, or keep a current email.
+ ACH deposits (usually 1-2) to your account (i.e. have your paychecks deposited into your account)
+ Use your debit card a certain amount of times (usually 10-12); some require they are POS transactions (meaning you have to use your pin).
This is a great way to earn some extra cash, but you have to be diligent in making sure requirements are met monthly. We have earned hundreds of dollars in interest using these accounts. If you are looking for a way to better-utilize your emergency fund money, this is a great option!
If you are interested, check with your bank or credit union to see if they offer this type of account. If they do, you can usually convert an existing checking account to the high-yield account. Go earn some interest!

MLK Monday: Celebrating with Cake
My kids love holidays. I also have a 2nd grader who loves learning about everything. She learned in school about Martin Luther King Jr. and insisted we celebrate the this weekend. The kids decided we needed to make a chocolate cake. They made the decorations, and I thought it was so cute.
Kids really are the future, and I know these sweet kids are going to go out and do good in the world (at least that's the hope as a mom). We had a nice talk about the message of "being judged by the content of our character, not the color of our skin", and it was a great way to celebrate this weekend.

Spritual Sunday: Peace
Today at church, we had a great lesson on finding peace. President Howard W. Hunter taught "Peace can come to an individual, only by an unconditional surrender - surrender to him who is the Prince of peace, who has the power to confer peace."
John 14:27 says: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."
I found these quotes about peace that I wanted to share. I hope we can all find lasting peace, not in the world, but through our Savior Jesus Christ. I hope everyone had a peaceful Sabbath day!

Snowy Saturday: Cheap Fun at Home
It was a snowy Saturday today, so we stayed at home. We spent part of the day cleaning the house to get ready for Sunday, but some of the day was also spent having fun as a family. Here are some ideas of ways to have a great time as a family at home on a snowy day, without having to spend money!
- Bundle up in snow clothes, and head out to play in the snow! Build a snowman, make snow angels, or go sledding.
- Warm up by drinking hot cocoa; my kids love this on a cold day!
- Snuggle up and read books either together or alone. There's nothing better on a cold, wet day!
- Play board games. There are so many fun games for all ages, and you are guaranteed some laughs!
- Make popcorn and watch movies. It's fun to get out some older movies you haven't seen for a while.
- Make your own restaurant-style food. You can fry up some chicken nuggets and fries for the kids, grill hamburgers and hot dogs inside, make homemade pizza, or whip up some easy Chinese food. My kids also like playing restaurant, by asking what you want then making you a plate.
- Just play! Let the kids enjoy not having anywhere to go, and they will come up with some very creative things to pretend. As a parent, observing their creativity is one of my favorite things to do!

Fiscal Friday: W-4 Withholding Calculator
Are you giving the government an interest-free loan? Whenever you get a tax refund, that money is not just a free gift from the government; you could have been saving that money throughout the year, earning interest for yourself. Do you know what your current withholding number is on your W-4? If you received a large tax refund last year, you need to assess and make a change to that form.
To do this, you will need a copy of your first paycheck of the year so you can fill out the federal taxes withheld. If you plan to itemize deductions on your tax return, you will need to know approximately how much you will deduct in certain areas like charitable contributions and mortgage interest. Once you have all of that information go to this website:
https://apps.irs.gov/app/withholdingcalculator/index.jsp
Once you fill out all the required information for your current situation, it will calculate the amount your refund will be if you keep your current withholding amount. It will recommend what your withholding number should be, in order to get you closest to breaking even without having to pay more federal taxes. This should be done each year, especially if there are any big change (such as a new baby or a change to your income).
To change your withholding number through your employer, you must fill out a new W-4 form. Some companies let you do it online through your employee portal, and others require you to do a paper form. If you have any questions, ask Human Resources.
I know a lot of people like getting big tax refunds. They view it as a bonus they can spend on a vacation, or some other big purchase. However, this money could be working for you all year long if you were keeping it yourself. Use that money to fund your Roth IRA, or put it in a high-yield bank account. This doesn't mean you can't go on that vacation, or make that big purchase; but only if you are able to budget and save for those things. Here's to a financially successful 2016!

Thoughtful Thursday: Giving Gifts
Today I baked cookies on my new silicone baking mats that my Mom gave me for Christmas! There is a story behind why she gave them to me, and I'll share that later. I learned the art of how to give thoughtful gifts, from none-other than my awesome Mom. I grew up in pretty humble circumstances, but every birthday and Christmas it seemed my Mom always gave gifts from the heart, that she knew we would love. As I have become a wife and mother, I have followed her example. Here are a couple hints on how to get someone just what they want, and let them know you really care about them.
Listen closely and remember things people say throughout the year; they will always give hints of things they want without saying "I want...". For some reason, I had told my Mom about trying to get those baking mats at Costco when they were on sale. Our Costco said they would not be getting any more in stock, so I was bummed I couldn't get them. When my Mom gave them to me on Christmas, I hadn't even remembered saying something about that to her; but she remembered, and she found some at her Costco. She was able to get me something I really wanted for Christmas, without her asking or me telling her something specific. When I was first married, I had remembered my husband talking about how he hadn't gotten a new suit for many years. His birthday was only a few weeks after we got married, and I had ordered a suit and had it sent to my parent's house before the wedding. He was so surprised and almost cried when he opened it up; he said it was the nicest gift he had ever received.
Really get to know what a person likes and enjoys; this will help to at least have a direction when looking for a gift. This is pretty easy to do with your spouse and kids, but sometimes it's more difficult for other family members you may not spend as much time with. My family does a sibling gift exchange every Christmas. This could include a brother or sister-in-law, so sometimes I have to go to a spouse or other family member to ask questions. It's fun for me to be given a different person each year to really think about what I can give to them that will make them smile or laugh.
It really is the thought that counts, not the amount of money spent. Sometimes a gift from the heart can mean more than something money can buy. As a mom, some of my favorite gifts are the little crafts my kids make at school or primary. My husband loves to write, and has written me some very touching poems he's given me with a card and flowers. I know my parents always enjoy getting letters of appreciation and love. Maybe even an offer of service, such as tending kids so a couple could go on a date. Giving of yourself is the greatest gift of all.

Web Wednesday: Star Wars
My husband Bryan and I are huge Star Wars fans (at least the original episodes IV - VI). We grew up watching them with our families, and I'll admit that as a kid I had some pretty scary nightmares about Darth Vader coming to capture me. To this day, if I see someone in a Darth Vader suit I get a little freaked out. We went on a date during the holidays to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens; after seeing that movie, Bryan couldn't wait to get out the original trilogy I gave him for Christmas to show to the kids. I was a little worried they would all have nightmares, but so far that hasn't seemed to be a problem. They LOVED those movies as much as we did as kids, which makes my somewhat-nerdy husband very proud. Here are some Star Wars-inspired viral videos we all enjoy as a family for your Web Wednesday. Enjoy!
First up is Cello Wars from The Piano Guys. We love them, and who doesn't love the amazing score by John Williams!
My kids love watching Kid Snippets, and here is one of their Star Wars-themed videos.
Finally, here is a Studio C Star Wars skit. Everyone needs a good laugh on Wednesday!

Tasty Tuesday: Easy Lasagna Recipe
I made my favorite lasagna recipe last night for dinner. Lasagna was my favorite food growing up, and this is the recipe my mom always used. I remember making a bulletin board about myself in the 4th grade, and I put up a box of lasagna noodles to represent my favorite food. I am putting this recipe out there, so you can enjoy this super easy, delicious dinner!
Lasagna
1 box oven ready lasagna noodles
1 tub cottage cheese (16 oz)
1 egg
1 lb hamburger
1 large jar spaghetti sauce (sometimes I use about 1/4-1/3 of a 2nd jar of sauce just to have enough)
1 lb Mozzarella cheese, grated
Fry hamburger till brown and add spaghetti sauce. Set aside. Add egg to tub of cottage cheese and stir well. Layer in a 9x13 pan as follows:
Thin layer of sauce mixture
½ of noodles
cottage cheese and egg mixture
½ of sauce mixture
½ of grated cheese
other ½ of noodles
other ½ of sauce mixture
other ½ grated cheese
If desired, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
I will usually make it the night before so it can sit in the fridge and the noodles soften better. If you do this, take it out of the fridge about ½ hour before putting it in the oven. Cover with tinfoil and bake at 375 for 45 minutes. Let sit about 10 or 15 minutes before serving.

I like to serve my lasagna with garlic bread and a green salad. Enjoy!

Motivational Monday: One Step at a Time
It's now the 11th day of a new year, and most people have probably broken some of their New Year's resolutions. This year, I have decided to take a different approach to how I implement goals. Instead of trying to start everything on January 1, I'm slowly starting goals week by week. The first week, I started this new blog and also resolved to do better at things like daily scripture study and prayer. This week, I've started my weekly menu and made sure dinner has been ready by the time my husband gets home from work. Next week, I plan to start working out again (now that I'm finally getting over being sick). Talking to my husband at the first of the year, he told me he thinks resolutions just once a year is pointless; he said we should constantly be evaluating and starting things to make us better. I agree! I get very discouraged when I try to start tons of resolutions, then I "fail" at them all the first month...or week...or day. It's easier for me to start one thing and make it a habit, then I can move on to the next thing. Hopefully this approach will help me have a successful and fulfilling year!
I saw this quote from Mark Twain and really liked what he said. I tend to get really overwhelmed when faced with big projects, but I know if I can just break them down into smaller tasks it won't seem as difficult. I'm going to try and use this philosophy more; I think it will really help with organizing my house!
I also like this thought. One goal at a time. One step at a time. I know I can do this!I'm ready for a fabulous new year! I especially needed some motivation this Monday, when I was up a lot in the night with a teething baby. I think we sometimes forget to cut ourselves some slack when we have kids (especially babies) that take up the majority of our time and energy. Sometimes it's hard to get motivated when you haven't slept in days, weeks, or months. Just remember you can get started, break it down, and take one step at a time!

Sunday Scriptures: Primary 2016
This year the Primary Theme is "I Know the Scriptures are True". We have been trying as a family to have scripture study every day this year. It's sometimes hard with all small children to feel like you are getting anything out of scripture study. But I know that it is much like going to church and having family home evening; we are building habits, and I know they are listening and learning even when it doesn't seem that way.
Last week we were all sick, so we didn't make it to church. This week we made it close to on time to our new 9:00 a.m. schedule. I think I'm going to enjoy this schedule better than 1:00 (if we can just make it through the crazy morning rush), because the time is better for the kids. They were so good today! In our rush, however, I didn't get a picture of the kids; maybe next week.
Sabrie has graduated from nursery to primary, and is officially a Sunbeam! After her difficulties adjusting to nursery, I wasn't sure how she would do moving up to primary. She did so awesome! Lexie took her to opening exercises where she went right to class and enjoyed every minute!
Hoyt is now in CTR 5. I didn't get much out of him about how it went, but he seemed happy after church so it must have been a good day.
Lexie has now graduated to Senior Primary, and is a CTR 7! AHHH! How did she grow up so fast?! She is preparing to get baptized later this year, so we are trying to get her all prepared with everything she needs to know before then. She has been really interested in reading her own scriptures, especially scriptures about baptism. She's had some of her friends get baptized recently, which has been making her even more excited for her own!
Finally, I just want to share a scripture I've been thinking about this past week.
We should constantly look to Christ in our lives. The Relief Society lesson this week went perfectly with this scripture. We need to recognize His hand in our lives. This past week, I have seen miracles happen for my family. The key is to have faith, and not let doubt and fear take over. I hope everyone's Sabbath has been a delight!

Shopping Saturday: Get Paid to Shop Online
Because I spent so much of my Saturday preparing and going grocery shopping, I'm going to make this post short today. Just because it's short though, doesn't mean there isn't some valuable information that will pay you to shop online. I did about 99% of all my Christmas shopping online this year. I am a little claustrophobic, so I don't do crowded stores during the holidays. I'm able to get just as good - or even better - deals than you find in stores during the big holiday sales, especially when I can get cash back. I know there are other similar sites, but these are the two I have been using for several years.
Getting Cash Back from ShopatHome & Ebates. It's easy to sign up, and all you have to do is go through their site first before going to the store site when you make a purchase. I usually get anywhere from 1% - 12% cash back on my purchases. Just on my Christmas online purchases, I'm getting over $100 back in cash! I usually get a check every few months from both ShopatHome and Ebates. They also have apps you can use to shop on your devices. Finally, they also show coupon codes you can use when you shop. It's just a really great bonus to shopping online.

Fun Friday: Eating Out on a Budget
One of the biggest potential budget busters is eating out. Try to limit eating out as much as possible, by doing the following:
1. Plan weekly menus, so you can cook and eat dinner at home each night. Helpful Tip: Use a slow cooker often!
2. Save extra dinner, and eat leftovers for lunches; or have a leftover dinner night.
3. Take lunch (use those leftovers) with you to work, or go home if you live close enough.
4. Keep the fridge and pantry stocked with essentials, so you can always make quick and easy meals.
That being said, our family enjoys eating out! As you know, I like to get good deals on everything; so here are some ways I like to save on restaurants:
1. Not all junk mail is junk - watch for restaurant coupons in the mailbox. I keep a stack of coupons in the car, so we can use them when we are out and need to grab a quick meal. Coupons are also a good way to try new places without paying full price.
2. Fundraiser coupon cards can be a great way to get a year's worth of restaurant coupons for a great price, and it's always good to donate to a good cause. The current card I have was $25, which paid for itself in just two restaurant visits! Not all of these are created equal, so make sure you look through the list to make sure you will take advantage of enough deals to make it worth your while.
3. Join rewards programs online for some of your favorite restaurants. You will get emails that let you know about special deals, as well as occasional coupons. Many places will send you a free coupon for your birthday, and some will even send one for each member of your family on their birthdays (our favorite is Texas Roadhouse). It may be a point system, where you can earn free items by earning points on every purchase (Chili's has a new point system, and Papa John's has a really awesome point system where you can earn free pizza).
4. Go out for lunch instead of dinner. Most restaurants have lunch specials that are really great deals. My husband and I enjoy going to lunch with just the little girls who aren't in school yet. We're able to go to restaurants our kids don't like; and in addition to getting a great deal, we only have to deal with 2 kids instead of 4. It's great!
5. Eat dinner on off nights. If you can, have date nights on days that people don't typically go out; that is when the great deals happen. Movie theaters (ours has $5 Tuesdays), bowling alleys, and restaurants all have nights with amazing specials to try and lure some people in when business is typically slower. If you are taking the kids, find out when restaurants have "Kid's Eat Free" nights.
**Bonus Tip: If you need to hit the grocery store before you make dinner at home, and your kids are begging for a snack; go to a place that offers free samples! Costco and Sam's Club are famous for handing out lots of free samples, and my kids love it! Our local grocery store gives each kid a "Cookie Credit Card", and they can eat a chocolate chip cookie each time you shop.

Thankful Thursday: Thank You Cards
This is something that has been on my mind a lot lately:
We know how important it is to be grateful for the many blessings in our lives, but how often do we express that gratitude? I think I do my best to express gratitude to my Heavenly Father in prayer, but I don't always give thanks to people around me. I know I can do a lot better this year, so I've decided to set a goal to start writing more Thank You Cards. It's such a simple thing, but I think giving someone a hand-written expression of thanks can really make a difference in both the lives of the giver and receiver.
Without getting too specific, I had been having a bad attitude about someone. This person wasn't keeping a promise, and I was frustrated; however, this person had also done some extremely nice things for our family. It hit me that I needed to let this person know of my gratitude, so I wrote a Thank You Card. It really helped my attitude soften toward this person, and I've tried to be more understanding of the situation.
Let's make this a year of giving thanks. If you feel gratitude, make sure you take the time to express it; I know this could make a huge difference in the lives of us all!
**Savings Tip: This doesn't have to be expensive. The dollar store always has packs of Thank You Cards for $1!

Web Wednesday: Laughter Is the Best Medicine
We've made it half-way through the week. Let's take a break from all things serious, and laugh! Here is one of my favorite quotes, from a great lady.
I love when people post funny things online. Social media can be pretty heated and controversial at times, but it is nice when we can just laugh together. I love Jim Gaffigan, and I've seen the following video posted several times. My cousin posted it on social media yesterday; it really hits home to us, because we each have four kids now. My favorite quote is: "What's it like having four kids? Imagine you're drowning, and someone hands you a baby". Haha so true. Enjoy!

Tuesday Tip: Mint.com - Budgeting Made Easy
Have you been putting off a budget because it seems too difficult or complicated? When I started doing a budget, I used a spreadsheet and entered everything manually. It was so time consuming, especially entering all receipts, and I knew there had to be a better way. That's when I discovered Mint.com. It has made doing a budget super fast and easy, and the best part is that the cost is FREE!
Getting started is easy! Once you create an account, add your online accounts for all of your finances including bank accounts, credit card accounts, retirement accounts, mortgage accounts, investment accounts, etc.
I've been asked if I felt my information is safe and secure, and the short answer is yes. This is a product owned by Intuit - the creators of Turbo Tax, Quickbooks, and Quicken. I have been using Turbo Tax to file my taxes for over a decade, and have never had a problem with any of my sensitive information being compromised.
One of the biggest advantages of Mint is the convenience of being able to sign in to one place and be able to see what is happening with all of my financial accounts! This screenshot gives you an idea of what the software looks like when you open it up (this is an older version, so the interface is slightly different now, but not much). This first page is an overview of your financial status.

Next is the Transactions tab. This is what makes doing the budget so easy. All transactions are pulled from your accounts, so there is no entering receipts manually! Under "Category" you use the drop-down menu to choose which budget it goes under. As you set categories, Mint is "smart" and starts marking transactions for you, based on your history. It's so easy, and only takes a few minutes to update each month. Time is no longer an excuse to not have a current budget!
Which brings me to the next important tab: Budgets. Here is where you budget how much income you should receive, then set spending budgets. Helpful Tip: You want your spending budgets to equal much less than your income! It will take a few months of tracking spending to get an idea of what your monthly budgets should be. Give yourself some time to get used to the software, and to find out where your money is going. Once you are able to set your monthly budgets, try hard to stay within them. One feature I like is doing roll-over budgets for things like gas and food; if you spend less one month, you have extra to spend the next month without changing your monthly budget amount. It's also nice to be able to go back and view how much you spent in certain categories for an entire year. This can be helpful when filing taxes; I can quickly find my charitable contributions, etc.
The last feature I want to go over is setting goals. I used this when I very first joined Mint to build an emergency fund. As you can see, you can choose a goal or create a custom goal. For example: when you save for an emergency, you tell them which account you want it to be in; then, whatever extra money you have after your budgets, they consider that money saved for your emergency fund and tell you how close you are getting to meeting your goal. It's great! They will also help you pay off debt, and have calculators to determine how much to budget to get them paid off by a certain time.
FYI: Mint also has an App for your phone! For me, it isn't as easy to set budgets, or change categories as the desktop version; however, I do like to use it to look at the overview, or check transactions once in a while.
If you are looking for an easy way to get started on a budget, give Mint.com a try! You won't regret knowing where your money is going, and it will help you change the way you spend. Good Luck!

Mommy Monday: Thoughts on Being a Mom
This was shared on social media today by one of my best friends. I think women
are naturally hard on themselves, but especially when it comes to being
a Mom.
I wrote the following about six months ago:
I just welcomed my fourth baby on April Fools Day, and her entrance into the world was no joke! My water broke in Walmart, my Dr. was out of town, and to really top it off, my epidural didn't work, resulting in my first all-natural delivery. It pretty much put an exclamation point on a very crazy, difficult, trying year. It's hard to complain too much, when I see others who have things so much worse; but we all face hard things, and I've learned it's how you respond to challenges that really prove what you are made of. I'm not saying I always respond in the best way, and it seems to me that hard things will continue to be put in front of me until I can learn to face them with unwavering faith, dignity, and bravery...so most likely the rest of my life!
What I have learned this past year, is that I am stronger than I ever thought possible. However, there are times when it's hard for me to see what gifts and abilities I have been blessed with in life. My Mom is a gifted musician, who uses her talents to bless the lives of an entire community. She's also a writer, who has had multiple stories published. It's easy to look at all of the talented people (especially women) in my life, who seem to be making a difference. Right now my entire life is engrossed in raising four little munchkins. As I take a short break to type this, I have kids fighting over Legos, a baby starting to wake up, laundry that needs to be switched, dishes that need to be done, and dinner that needs to be made...oh, and now a bloody nose to deal with.
Yep, that about sums it up. Life with four kids is all-consuming. I see friends being successful in their careers, starting businesses, and using their many talents that I do not posess. Right now my biggest accomplishments are completing endless loads of laundry and dishes, making sure we are all kept clean and fed, helping with homework, reading stories, playing with toys, and singing songs. I'm not rewarded with income or career advancements, but I am starting to see the little rewards I do get: lots of hugs and kisses, beautiful baby smiles, kids' amazing test scores, developmental milestones, hand-made pictures and I love you notes...just to name a few.
Life is good! Being a Mom is the hardest job I've ever had. I worked a variety of jobs from around age 8 or 9, until I gave birth to my oldest at 27. It was not easy to quit and be a full-time Mom, but I have never regretted my decision to be at home. They grow up so fast! Even though I am hard on myself and want to do better, I hope that in the future they will understand and appreciate my sacrifice. I am forever grateful my own Mom was home with me and my siblings. There are specific times I remember needing her, and I could always rely on her being there for me.
This is my life as a Mom. These are the four best things I've done with my life up to this point, and I'm grateful they call me Mommy.

Spritual Sunday: Blessings of Paying Tithes & Offerings
As you can tell from the blog name, I really enjoy budgeting and saving money. I have taught some classes on these topics, and the first thing I tell people is this: If you want enough money to meet your needs, you must pay an honest tithe and generous fast offering. (Note that I said needs, not wants).
This principle was one that came easy for me to follow. I think it's because I observed my parents faithfully living this commandment with exactness, and I saw the results of always having our needs met. I heard them tell the stories of only having enough money left to either pay tithing or buy groceries for the rest of the month; they paid tithing, and that same amount of money came back to them in unexpected ways to buy the groceries. Did tithing make us rich? No, at least not temporally. The blessings of tithing are as much spiritual as they are temporal.
I grew up always paying tithing. I guess I never wanted to test what would happen if I didn't. I was blessed to be able to pay my way through college without getting into any debt. I was always able to find jobs to support myself. Another huge blessing that comes from being a full tithe payer, is being able to go to the temple. That has been a huge blessing to me the past 14 years!
In 9 years of marriage, we've gone through around 10 job changes between us. I'm the type of person who does not like change, and I grew up with my Dad at the same job for 30 years. My husband is a Software Engineer, which tends to be a volatile industry. However, every time he's needed a new job, he has been able to find one within a few weeks. We know this is a blessing from paying tithing.
I will end with one specific example of how we've been blessed. The month after I gave birth to our 2nd child, our tithing and fast offerings had built up (I love being able to pay online now so this isn't a problem anymore). I had been contemplating what we needed to do to earn more money, because we were barely getting by financially at that time. I decided that week, I would pay our tithing from the past month; I also paid a fast offering greater than usual with this dilemma in mind. A few days later, my husband was laid off from his job. We were devastated at first, wondering why that was the result of our offering; but we felt peace that things would work out. Within a few weeks, he had a job offer that paid double what he had been making. It was amazing how greatly we were blessed, and we have been since that time also. This does not mean there won't be challenges and hard times (we've certainly had our share of those), but does help us have a feeling of peace. We are not wealthy or have all of the finer things of life, but as I state: our needs have been met.
I am grateful for tithing. It may seem like a huge sacrifice, but it is really a huge blessing. Because our Heavenly Father gives us everything, it shouldn't be hard to give back only 10%. Test it out, and see what happens. I know you'll be happy with the results!
Savings Saturday: Always Buy Groceries on Sale!
When we had our first baby over 7 years ago, I quit my job to be a stay-at-home mom. My husband was making a decent, but somewhat-minimal wage at that time. I had to do things to stay within the budgets of our income, so I made sure I always got the best deals on everything, especially groceries.
At the time, coupons were great! By combining sales and coupons, we were able to feed our family for a lot less, and build food storage. Because of shows like Exteme Couponing, paper coupons are not worth as much now; however, there are still ways to never pay full price on groceries. Here are some tips:
Get to know grocery prices so you know what is a good or great sale.
Try to only buy items on sale each week. (It's also smart to plan your weekly menus around sales.)
Take advantage of store promotional programs and online coupons.
When items are at an extreme low price, stock up for the entire year (if you are able).
Take advantage of case lot sales.
Make a list, and try to stick to the list.
I usually compare ads and shop at 2 stores per week with the best sales.
These are only a few of the techniques I use to save money on groceries. In future posts, I will go into more detail. I have not been as diligent in doing all of these things in the past year, because of the chaos and challenges we faced. But I am committing to staying under budget on groceries all year, so I'm going to be using these tips and finding new ways to save. Join me!

New Year, New Blog, New Beginning...
For almost 2 years, our family has been functioning in survival mode. This is the beginning of a brand new year: I'm ready to move beyond just surviving, and want our family to experience real growth and progression again. I can do this! I am the wife and mother, and I can help create a home where our family can truly flourish and prosper in all aspects of life. Ready? Go!
I started this blog, so I have a place to sort out and write down my thoughts each day. I also want to share ideas and experiences along the way with others who are interested in saving, budgeting, motherhood, and other areas of life I'm passionate about.
Goals for this year are simple, yet if implemented I believe they will be life-changing. Here is my plan:
Spiritual Goals:
Family - Daily Scriptures, Daily Prayer, & Weekly Family Home Evening. Consistency is the key!
Personal - Daily Scriptures, Daily Prayer, Fulfill Callings, & Attend Temple Regularly.
Financial Goals:
More Consistency in Following a Set Budget - this will help us save more to achieve our goals!
Fully Fund our Retirement Accounts - we must be prepared for the future!
Save Enough to Pay Cash to Landscape our Yard - pay as you go is the best way!
Start to Make Extra Payments on the House - see how fast we can pay off our last remaining debt!
Getting our House in Order:
Finish Unpacking & Organizing the House - room by room, closet by closet, this will take time.
Plan Weekly Menus - this will help keep the food budget under, and mealtime less stressful.
More Consistent Routines - especially mealtimes, and bedtimes.
Emergency Preparedness - make sure our 72-hour kits are completed, and work on food storage.
Relationship Goals:
Marriage Relationship - Date Nights, Lunch Dates, Read Books Together, No Contention
Family Relationships - No Yelling or Fighting, Eat Meals Together & Talk, Work & Play Together
Physical Goals:
Exercise More Consistently, Eat More Healthy Foods, Go on Family Bike Rides, Go to the Dentist
These are some things I believe will help us this year. I have other small things I want to do this year that I will write down for myself. It seems like a lot, but we are doing or working on many of these things already. I know this year can be amazing!
My last thought has to do with looking ahead, not back. I feel like I looked back and focused on things I couldn't control this past year. I refuse to let the things of the past get me down. It's a new day "with no mistakes in it" as Anne of Green Gables so eloquently stated. Here we go 2016!
